About Amarnath Yatra

Amarnath Yatra, an annual Hindu pilgrimage, is revered. Every year, millions of pilgrims set out on this journey to find salvation. In Kashmir, the sacred cave of Amarnath Cave is located at an elevation of 3,888 meters.

Srinagar is 141 kilometers away. There are two ways to complete this pilgrimage. One is from Baltal and is the shortest, while the other is from Pahalgam and is longer but more traditional.

Legend and Significance of Amarnath Yatra

The Amarnath Cave is thought to be 5000 years old and was discovered by a shepherd named Buta Malik. According to the legend, Buta met a saint here who gave him a sack of coal. When Buta came home and opened the bag, he discovered it was filled with gold. When Buta Malik returned to see the saint, he discovered the Amarnath cave.

Baba Barfani is another name for the apparition of Shiva Lingam at Amarnath Cave. According to mythology, when Maa Parvati insisted on Lord Shiva teaching her his immortality secret. So, in order to reveal his secret, Lord Shiva moved near the cave, where no one else could hear the secret of his immortality.

Lord Shiva left his vahana (vehicle) Nandi in Pahalgam on his way to the cave. As the lord walked on foot from here, this is how the location received its name. He then left the moon in Chanderbadi, which is 16 kilometers from Pahalgam.

Lord Shiva dropped the serpent from his neck at Sheshnag, and Lord Shiva left his son Ganesha at Mahagunas Mountain. He left the five components at Panchtarni. When Lord Shiva arrived to the cave, he summoned fire to destroy everything in its path, except for two pigeon eggs beneath his seat. The eggs hatched while the narrative was being told.

While Lord Shiva was telling Maa Parvati the secret of creation and his immortality, a couple of pigeons overheard and thus became immortal. As a result, people throng to the cage each year in search of moksha.

From June to August, Amarnath Cave is only open for three months. This is the only opportunity to embark on the Amarnath Yatra and seek blessings.
